One particular disease in various Chinese churches: confusion between the importance of the Bible and a set of dogma.
While listening to the introduction of the audiobook for Eugene Peterson's The Message, he pointed out that St. Augustine was at first appalled that God did not come as a literary academician to teach high brow details of heaven.
That made me realize the main problem with various Chinese churches. For various reasons people are so enamour with dogma, perhaps because they have not been exposed to the entire bible, and are happy with the 4 spiritual laws cliffnote version. They think that evangelism and discipleship is indoctrinating someone with the set of dogma.
As a consequence, immature bible study leaders tend to read the bible in order to justify the dogma, rather than extoling the Bible as its own voice. This is so intolerable that I had refused to participate in such studies.
How important it is for us to bring the message of the Bible to people again. Perhaps the Chinese Christian community need to come up with resources like The Message as well.
